Helen Walks for MacMillan Cancer Support
On Mother’s Day, 3rd April, Transcendit's Helen Littlewood is doing a sponsored 11 mile walk (she says she MIGHT jog some of it, but I don't believe it) for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of a friend who died of cancer in 2009. Towards the end the Macmillan nurses were amazing and convinced Helen that this was such a worthy cause. If you would like to sponsor Helen, please visit her Just Giving page at http://www.justgiving.com/helen-littlewood.
Transcendit Supporting Webdurance
On the 15th and 16th July 2010, Transcendit’s very own Lee Irving, Luke Brown and Paul Callaghan took part in the 24-hour website build, Webdurance. Volunteer web programmers, designers and writers were locked up in a room and challenged to create new websites for regional charities. See webdurance.ning.com for details.
Fundraising for CHUF
The Children's Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) is a charity close to Transcendit's heart as it was founded in 1979 by Ann Scott, mother of Transcendit Director Dave. It was formed after the death of Dave's sister Lesley Ann who was born with the same congenital heart defect that had claimed the life of her sister, and Ann’s first daughter, Lisa.
CHUF aims to keep the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle at the forefront of children’s cardiac care. It raises money to buy equipment, facilities, childcare, pay salaries and fund research for the Children’s Heart Unit and PICU. Funds go towards helping the doctors, nurses and carers give the best care for the children and their families.
We show our support by making regular donations, attending fundraising events and forcing Tom Tinsley to run the Great North Run for CHUF each year! Recently we had the pleasure of raising nearly £2,500 for CHUF whilst having fun celebrating Transcendit's 10th Anniversary.
Baobab Health
Lee Irving deserves a special mention as a technical contributor to the BAOBAB Health project.
Baobab Health Trust is a Malawian NGO that finds technological solutions to healthcare challenges in Malawi. It does so by developing software, installed on touchscreens, that is used in hospitals and clinics around the country. These touchscreens help healthcare workers to register patients and aggregate essential treatment-related data.
More importantly, Baobab systems allow nurses more time to spend with their patients, as tasks like patient registration can be taken over by clerks, rather than healthcare personnel.
Sport and Sponsorship
Transcendit has always taken pride in sponsoring a junior football team. Initially based in Newburn in the west of Newcastle upon Tyne, we chose Newburn Juniors and supported one of their teams until 2009. The teams were very successful, winning several cups and promotions.
For the 2010/11 season we have a new sponsorship arrangement with a very young team at Whickham Fellside Youth Football Club. We wish the lads an enjoyable and successful year.
