If you’re thinking of starting your own business in the new year, there are organisations out there that will help you to make it happen. The Millin Charity provides a range of support and services to women in Newcastle and Gateshead, and helps them to become financially independent.
What is The Millin Charity?
The Millin Charity was established over 20 years ago, with the aim of supporting multiply marginalised and disadvantaged women to access more opportunities, improve their employability and start businesses that they believe in. The word ‘millin’ is Urdu, Bangladeshi and Hindi for ‘togetherness’, which is at the heart of the work that the charity does. This female-led organisation centres women supporting women, and in doing so, allowing them to improve their mental health and community.
What support do they offer?
The Millin Charity has a number of different projects that women can get involved with.
Local Women, Local Enterprise
The Millin Charity’s Local Women, Local Enterprise project is a series of accredited courses, training and workshops, led by local business women to support other women who want to develop a business idea, and get that idea off the ground. You can gain accredited qualifications in Economic Wellbeing and Financial Capability, Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development and Retail Knowledge.
These qualifications include practical workshops to support business development. This includes Plan Your Enterprise, where you’ll be encouraged to set sustainable goals and become self-employed, Developing Your Brand and Building Your Customer Based, where you can find your brand identity and reach your target market, and Legalities To Know About, which includes information about HMRC, business structures and how to complete a self-assessment.
Business advice and guidance
The Millin Charity also offers support outside of gaining a qualification. This includes one-to-one business advice, where you can meet with a local business advisor to discuss your idea, and identify the steps you’ll need to take to make your idea a reality. Your business advisor can also talk you through business planning, working out your income and expenditure, how to reach your customers, financial management, market research and trading opportunities.
You can also get independent advice on risk management and planning, as well as branding, marketing and online sales. If you need some support with getting on social media, The Millin Charity even has social media experts that you can meet with.
Independent events
If you’d like to try an event with the Millin Charity to see if it could be a good fit for you, you can check out their calendar. They run a number of standalone events including Confidence Building for Business, Intro to Bookkeeping for Business and Introduction to Canva for Business Cards and Flyers. All of these events are free and hosted at their Local Women Local Enterprise hubs in Newcastle and Gateshead.

Transcendit understand that when you choose to work with us, whether we're taking care of your IT, app or
web development, you're trusting us with part of your business. So whether we're looking after your
computers, phone systems or servers we always do things 'the
Transcendit way'.
The whole of our team adhere to the same values, beliefs and policies - the principles that were written
when Transcendit first formed in 2000. Whether you come to us for cloud services or recovery backup you
can be confident that you'll always receive the same excellent service.
The Transcendit way outlines how we do business; following the same straightforward principles with every
client and customer, regardless of how big or small they may be.
We understand that not everybody speaks fluent IT, so we try to explain things in a way that is
simple and clear. We always spend as much time as is necessary explaining things to you.
If you need to talk to us about something, no matter how insignificant, we are only ever a phone
call away – and we’re never too busy to make you a cup of tea and have a sit down with you in
person.
We understand how frustrating it can be when things are late. When we schedule an appointment with
you, we are there when you’re expecting us. If something prevents us from getting there, we always
call you in advance to let you know.
Sometimes things can go wrong, but we never lie to you or try to cover something up. If things go
askew we tell you what’s happened and how we plan to prevent it affecting your business.
We want you to continuously benefit from working with us. We regularly discuss your business and
make suggestions for improving systems and processes wherever we can – but we never try to push
you into a purchase.
When we quote a fixed price, that's always the amount we charge – you won’t find any nasty
surprises on a bill from us. If you are paying by time and materials, we inform you if our
approximations could change.
We understand the importance of privacy for your business and your customers. We respect the
confidentiality of your data, and we will never pass on your information to third parties.
We appreciate it when you take the time to give us feedback. A system called CustomerSure records
our client's responses, so you can trust that our reviews are from real people.
