UK Disability History Month is taking place from 19th November to 19th December, and it's a great opportunity to reflect on your business, and how you can better support your disabled employees and customers. Here are a few different ways that you can celebrate Disabled History Month this year.
Disability History Month is about celebrating the achievements of disabled people, and part of doing this is by learning about the impact that disabled activists have had on the UK and around the world. This timeline from Historic England takes you from disabilities in the medieval period in 1050, to how attitudes towards disabilities changed after the Second World War. You can read the full timeline on their website, or listen to the timeline as audio clips.
RNID (Royal National Institute for Deaf People) has two e-learning courses, designed to support employees and management to improve their deaf awareness. According to the RNID, 1 in 3 adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus, which means that your organisation has to be aware of deaf communication, and the way it can be used by hearing people. Their Deaf awareness training is designed for staff who could come into contact with deaf people, and their Recruiting, managing and supporting deaf employees training is designed for those in management positions.
Difference North East published their Good Practice in Inclusive Employment guidance in March, after conversations with disabled people about their experiences of work systems across the North East. The report highlighted the over emphasis on support to get disabled people into work, rather than support needed to help them stay employed. It also discusses the lived reality of fluctuating capacity, how to build accessibility into recruitment, reduce financial pressure and create support which is routine rather than reactive.
Disability North offers training and consultancy services to businesses and organisations which are looking to improve their disability awareness. This training is bespoke for your business, and can be created around your goals; whether that’s to improve staff awareness of disabilities, practical support on making more accessible environments in your business, or creating an inclusive and disability affirming culture. The training is delivered by Angie Stewart, their Engagement and Inclusion Lead.
This voluntary scheme is run by the UK Government, and communicates to staff and customers that you are a disability affirming business. There are three levels available for businesses; Level 1: Disability Confident Committed, Level 2: Disability Confident Employer, and Level 3: Disability Confident Leader. For Level 1, you must agree to the Disability Confident Commitments, and identify one practice that you can do to make a difference for disabled people. For Level 2, you’ll need to complete a self assessment, and confirm that you’re employing disabled people. For Level 3, your self-assessment is externally validated, and you must publicly report on disability, mental health and wellbeing.
Transcendit understand that when you choose to work with us, whether we're taking care of your IT, app or
web development, you're trusting us with part of your business. So whether we're looking after your
computers, phone systems or servers we always do things 'the
Transcendit way'.
The whole of our team adhere to the same values, beliefs and policies - the principles that were written
when Transcendit first formed in 2000. Whether you come to us for cloud services or recovery backup you
can be confident that you'll always receive the same excellent service.
The Transcendit way outlines how we do business; following the same straightforward principles with every
client and customer, regardless of how big or small they may be.
We understand that not everybody speaks fluent IT, so we try to explain things in a way that is
simple and clear. We always spend as much time as is necessary explaining things to you.
If you need to talk to us about something, no matter how insignificant, we are only ever a phone
call away – and we’re never too busy to make you a cup of tea and have a sit down with you in
person.
We understand how frustrating it can be when things are late. When we schedule an appointment with
you, we are there when you’re expecting us. If something prevents us from getting there, we always
call you in advance to let you know.
Sometimes things can go wrong, but we never lie to you or try to cover something up. If things go
askew we tell you what’s happened and how we plan to prevent it affecting your business.
We want you to continuously benefit from working with us. We regularly discuss your business and
make suggestions for improving systems and processes wherever we can – but we never try to push
you into a purchase.
When we quote a fixed price, that's always the amount we charge – you won’t find any nasty
surprises on a bill from us. If you are paying by time and materials, we inform you if our
approximations could change.
We understand the importance of privacy for your business and your customers. We respect the
confidentiality of your data, and we will never pass on your information to third parties.
We appreciate it when you take the time to give us feedback. A system called CustomerSure records
our client's responses, so you can trust that our reviews are from real people.
