Spring is just around the corner (if you go by the calendar, not the forecasts), and we're looking forward to getting on our bikes again. Transcendit are promoting the government's Cycle to Work scheme, which allows employees to save up to 42% on bicycles and equipment.
The Cycle to Work scheme was introduced by the government in 1999, as part of the Green Transport Plan. The scheme provides an annual tax exemption, allowing employers to loan bicycles and other equipment to employees as a tax-free benefit. The Cycle to Work scheme was introduced to 'encourage healthier journeys to work and to reduce environmental pollution'.
As an environmentally conscious organisation, Transcendit were very keen to get involved. 'As a business, we have a responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment any way we can,' says director Tom Tinsley. 'The Cycle to Work scheme is one of the great ways we can do that - and everyone saves money in the process.'
'We've been working with Evans Cycles in Gateshead to provide bicycles and equipment to our team. It's really easy to sign up with them, and they provide excellent customer service. They made starting the scheme at Transcendit completely stress free - I have nothing but good things to say about them.'
Christophe Duhaut enrolled in the scheme last year, and frequently cycled to work over the summer months. 'It keeps me fit, and puts me in a good mood for work.' says Christophe. 'When you drive to work you're often stuck in traffic at rush hour, and if it's been really busy you get to work in a bad mood. A bike ride just sets you up for the day.'
Tom hopes that this year more of our team will enroll; but he is also hoping that more North East employers will sign up. 'It's got so many benefits for organisations and employees, there's no reason not to give it a go. Cycling is a great way to stay active, and enjoy everything the North East has to offer. We live in such a beautiful part of the country; we should be taking advantage of it.'
